According to the World Steel Statistics 2023 released by the World Steel Association, in 2022, the world crude steel output reached 1.885 billion tons, down 4.08% year on year; the total apparent consumption of steel was 1.781 billion tons.

In 2022, the top three countries in the world in crude steel production are all Asian countries. Among them, China’s crude steel output was 1.018 billion tons, down 1.64% year on year, accounting for 54.0% globally, ranking first; India 125 million tons, up 2.93% or 6.6%, ranking second; Japan 89.2 million tons, up 7.95% year on year, accounting for 4.7%, ranking third. Other Asian countries accounted for 8.1% of the world’s total crude steel production in 2022.

In 2022, US crude steel production was 80.5 million tons, down 6.17% year on year, ranking fourth (global crude steel output was 5.9%); Russian crude steel production was 71.5 million tons, down 7.14% year on year, ranking fifth (Russia and other CIS countries and Ukraine accounted for 4.6% globally). In addition, the 27 EU countries accounted for 7.2% globally, while other European countries produced 2.4%; other regional countries including Africa (1.1%), South America (2.3%), the Middle East (2.7%), Australia and New Zealand (0.3%) produced 6.4% globally.

In terms of enterprise ranking, six of the top 10 major crude steel producers in the world in 2022 are Chinese steel enterprises. The top 10 were China Baowu (131 million tons), AncelorMittal (68.89 million tons), Angang Group (55.65 million tons), Japan Iron (44.37 million tons), Shagang Group (41.45 million tons), Hegang Group (41 million tons), Pohang Iron (38.64 million tons), Jianlong Group (36.56 million tons), Shougang Group (33.82 million tons), Tata Iron and Steel (30.18 million tons).

In 2022, the world’s apparent consumption (finished steel) will be 1.781 billion tons. Among them, China’s consumption occupies a larger proportion, reached 51.7%, India accounted for 6.4%, Japan accounted for 3.1%, other Asian countries accounted for 9.5%, the eu 27 accounted for 8.0%, other European countries accounted for 2.7%, North America accounted for 7.7%, Russia and other cis countries and Ukraine accounted for 3.0%, including Africa (2.3%), South America (2.3%), the Middle East (2.9%), Australia and New Zealand (0.4%), other countries accounted for 7.9%.
